Warner’s Licensing Bonanza- process
While cleaning out my flat files, I found a rough from a proposed series of garments featuring the WB pigs, Porky and Petunia. I still felt that. the image was still a viable one so I decided to finish it, to be used as a comic book cover.
I penciled the image with a couple of changes, adding Road Runner,Michigan J. Frog and Marvin’s spaceship – while also changing Wile E Coyote’s position on the lifeguard stand. These pencils were done traditionally on board, as is my normal process before inking- I rarely draw directly in the digital realm ( there is an exception in this piece). Wile E was drawn separately and inserted into his position on the lifeguard station. Michigan replaced Taz from the original sketch on the lunchbox.
Yosemite Sam ( who appears on the wanted poster pinner to the lifeguard station) and MIchigan were also drawn individually, so that I can digitally ink them and place them into the small spots where they appear. Bugs was from an image I had done previously – that image was placed and duplicated on the shirt digitally.
After inking a good portion of the image (and partially coloring), I noticed it looked unbalanced- okay but not quite right so Speedy Gonzales was added racing Road Runner, and Wakko Warner and Jerry Mouse were added to the foreground.
The lunch box was based on a box from the 1959; that ironically enough is part of the Smithsonian collection. While I didn’t use the images off the box, I did have to recreate the television dials- here’s where my drawing exception comes in- I drew the dial digitally and in full color then placed it three times in position. I added the new pieces and finished the inking and coloring process to complete the cover.
There are 16 characters in this image ( depends how you count the Powerpuff Girls)…
