Pebbles Cereal Premium Designs
Creating and designing in-pack and mail order premiums for Pebbles Cereal from Post was one of my main responsibilities during the time I was working at the Nipper Group. This assignment was right up my alley as drawing licensed cartoon characters was one of the things I love to do most. The projects were unique and created by me wholly – I was free to design anything that worked and met the packing standards of the food industry.
A couple of those projects are represented here- the mail order Bedrock Drawing Kit which included a pencil box, eraser and pencils emblazoned with images of Fred and the Cartoon Network logo. The kit also included a stencil which included images of Fred, the Flintmobile, Dino and several scenic items, such as trees, so that the user can “draw” their favorite resident of Bedrock. It also included a full color model sheet, which in later applications of the product became a full-on “how to draw Fred” booklet.
The Mood Wheel was an in-pack paper “toy” door hanger that allowed Fred, Barney or Dino to change expressions to reflect the consumer’s mood at the time by turning the wheels at the top and bottom of the folded card. The entire idea was based on a childhood toy of my aunt’s from the 1940/50’s called Changeable Charlie – which was a series of blocks that you could turn and make several different faces and expressions.
This project even garnered my name on a US patient for a paper grommet I created. The grommet was created out of necessity as we couldn’t use small metal ones due to food safety measures and that the most likely user of the product would be a child. The grommet was needed to hold on the wheels of the facial expressions.
