The Comicbook inker
My job in comics is primarily as an inker. An inker’s role in the process is to clean up and embellish the pencil art making it ready for production.Inking is the second (or third behind the letterer) step in creating the art for a comic. When I began my work in comics, inking was done using traditional tools and materials- pen and ink on paper- today, it is mainly done on the computer in programs such as Photoshop or what I use, Clip Studio Paint. The use of computers has sped up the process tremendously.
My own personal process is drawing with pencil traditionally, scanning that art and inking digitally. This portfolio is a presentation of digital inking, with a few exceptions. Most of the images are drawn by other artist, “pencillers” such as John Byrne and Fernando Ruiz.
Do I pencil? Sure, but I find my success as an inker serves me better in the of meeting deadlines.
